Having a gun for home defense is a very important thing to consider, and because this is a site about handguns, we’ll talk about those (even though a pistol grip shotgun would probably be a better choice). Home Invasions for robbery, kidnapping, or sexual assault is still a problem in today’s society, and the best way to protect yourself and more importantly your family is to have a gun ready. We wanted to look at the best type of handgun and a specific model of that type that would be the best handgun for home defense.

What is the best gun for home defense?

We’ve chosen the full-size, semi-auto, .45 ACP Glock 21 from Glock as the Best Handgun for Home Defense. We chose it because of the following reasons; gun size, round/caliber, capacity, reliability/readiness, and the gun type.

Gun Size

For home defense purposes, it’s not necessary to have a smaller-sized gun, as it would be in the concealed carry arena. In fact, it’s probably a better idea to have a bigger gun, so it can hold more rounds of a more powerful caliber. That’s why we chose the full-size gun frame of the Glock 21.

Capacity

Many people think that the revolver is the best gun for home defense, and I just about decided on a .44 mag revolver for this title. But as I thought about it, there was one major problem with the revolvers; their ammo capacity. A revolver only has the capacity for 5-6 bullets, while the Glock 21 has the capacity for 13. With a semi-auto gun, you also have the ability to reload a new magazine much quicker than a revolver could, even with a speed loader. In a situation of an actual home invasion, you want all the rounds you can have, because you probably won’t be your most accurate shooter when your heart is beating so fast and you’re that nervous. For that, you should have more rounds available to you than a revolver could provide.

Round / Caliber

I’ve chosen the .45 ACP as the round of choice in the area of home defense, because it is a very powerful and accurate handgun round, with ample stopping from close distance. It’s also much smaller than say the .44 mag or the .500 S&W, so you can have a much greater capacity in your gun. Those other rounds have significantly more power than the .45 ACP, but in a home invasion situation, the .45 ACP would have ample stopping power.

Reliability / Readiness

Now there are a lot of great semi-auto, full-size, .45 ACP handguns on the market today, and most would make great guns for home defense. But I chose the Glock 21 for its reliability and readiness. Glocks are known for their reliability, and few can question that. They are designed to be simple, and able to fire every time you pull the trigger. In a home invasion situation, the last thing you want is a jammed gun, and the Glocks will prove to be extremely reliable.

They are also known for their readiness because safety is built into the trigger. No worrying about fiddling around with a safety switch when you want to be firing, and in such a stressful time, another thing to worry about is not good. The Glock will fire when you pull the trigger, period. The Best Handgun for Home Defense is the one that will fire whenever you need it to.

Gun Type

Now this category was a close one, and I had to choose between a semi-auto pistol and a revolver. The revolvers are simple, extremely reliable, and very accurate. They are probably overall more reliable than semi-auto guns, but the magazine capacity was what made the difference here. Semi-auto guns have the ability to hold and shoot more ammo and reload more quickly than revolvers. Again, in stressful times, probably at night when you can’t see as well, you aren’t going to be shooting 1” groups as you would be at the range. You want as many rounds as you can have.

Best Handgun for Home Defense

The bottom line is that the Glock 21 is the best handgun for home defense that you can buy. The large gun size can hold up to 13 powerful .45 ACP rounds, can be quickly reloaded, and most of all will shoot when you pull the trigger. No safety switch or jamming to worry about with the Glock.

With recent events such as the Aurora, CO theater shootings and the complete lawlessness in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Americans are realizing more and more that the only way to truly ensure the safety of themselves and their families is to arm themselves. If you don’t have a gun already, now is the absolute best time to get one before they get more expensive and more limited. But with so much information out there, making a decision on what handgun to get is difficult. This is why we are going to go over how to choose a handgun and get the gun that is perfect for you.

We’ll walk you through the decision process of figuring out:

  • What you will be using the gun for
  • What type and size of gun will work best for you
  • Determining the perfect first caliber
  • Figuring out your price range

This process will hopefully help you solidify much more what you are looking for, and help you make a final decision.

In the end, we’ll actually tell you what gun we recommend more than any other one to be the best overall gun for first-time owners. So stay tuned!

Continued Training

If you are new to the world of handguns, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to educate and train yourself on guns. For this, we have specifically written a guide of all the things that we WISH people would have told us when starting out. It’s titled the First Handgun Boot Camp and is available through Amazon for a fraction of the cost of a handgun class.

So please check out it, and let us know what you think!

What should I look for in a first handgun?

a person showing a handgun in his hands at the store

Let’s clear one thing up before we get started on anything else. If you ask anyone in the gun world about the best first pistol to get, you will likely get a variety of answers, mostly based on personal preference and familiarity. Sometimes all of these recommendations will overwhelm you.

In the end, the best gun to get for your first handgun is always going to be the one that feels the best to you. It should fit comfortably in your hand, be easy for you to use and manipulate, and feel great to shoot. Other factors than that really don’t matter a ton and should be taken with a grain of salt. Bottom line is that you should love your gun.

So now let’s start narrowing down what kind of gun will work best for you.

Purpose of Use

The first thing to consider with selecting your first handgun is what you plan to use it for. Don’t let this intimate you though, many people don’t really have a really specific reason or use for a gun in their day-to-day lives, but still want one, and like to have one around for various reasons.

But some people plan to use their handgun for very specific situations such as:

  • Concealed Carry
  • Home Defense
  • Outdoors / Hunting
  • etc.

For these purposes, there are certain types, sizes, and calibers of guns that will be better in those individual situations.

But for most people, a good, general-use handgun that can do everything fairly well is what they are going to want to select.

What are the 4 types of handguns?

So now let’s take a look at the best type of handgun you should get. Now there are basically two types of handguns out there – revolvers and semi-automatics. Revolvers are the guns with the revolving cylinders that you see in old-time, Wild West movies. Semi-Autos are the newer style guns that have removable magazines and usually a slide that slides back and forth to cycle the action of a gun.

Revolvers are generally thought of to be more reliable, just because of their inherent simplicity, but semi-autos have the ability to fire rounds faster and reload much faster and easier than revolvers.

With modern advances in the reliability of semi-autos, we would have to recommend that you look at one of these for your first handgun type. again, you will have to decide which type feels the best for you, but a semi-auto will give you the ability to carry more rounds in your gun and shoot and reload it faster.

Size

The next thing to think about when selecting your first gun is the size you want it to be. Now there are basically 3 different sizes of guns – small, medium, and large. Both revolvers and semi-autos come in both sizes, and the one you select will largely depend on what you plan on using the gun for.

If you plan on doing a lot of concealed carry, you will obviously want to look at a gun that’s a bit smaller in size, so you can conceal it easier. If you will be packing your gun on your hip while hunting or hiking, then you can probably get away with a bit larger size.

We recommend that for a general-purpose gun, you look at one in the medium size range. These guns will be more versatile in more situations, so you can use them for both concealed carry and hunting.

But we definitely recommend airing on the larger size of guns, just because they are more comfortable and easier to shoot, hold more rounds, and are generally better guns. So unless you plan on specifically carrying your gun concealed, we recommend that you don’t get a small-sized handgun.

What caliber pistol is right for you?

One of the most popular debates in the world of handguns revolves around calibers. There are many different calibers of rounds available, and each performs a bit differently. But for all intents and purposes, there are only a few different calibers that you will be looking at for your first handgun. These are (in ascending order of size/power:

  • .22 LR
  • 9mm
  • .38 Special
  • .40 S&W
  • .45 ACP

Again, there are literally hundreds of other round sizes out there, but these are the 5 that are the most common for people to get for their first gun.

The .22 LR is the smallest common handgun round and isn’t good for anything when it comes to self-defense, but the pistols are fun and easy to shoot, with the bullets costing virtually nothing.

The 9mm is the most common round in the world and is a very common pick for the first semi-auto pistols.

The .38 Special is a revolver-only round that is probably the most common revolver round out there. This round is usually fired from short-barreled revolvers, known as ‘snub nose’ revolvers.

The .40 S&W is now the standard round for most police forces in the US and is a great general round for a variety of uses.

The .45 ACP is a larger round that has been the standard issue round for our military for over 100 years. While you can’t carry very many of these, they definitely pack a great punch.

So in the end, we would recommend that you select either the 9mm or the .40 S&W for your first handgun. These are both rounds that perform great, have good stopping power, and are readily available for cheap.

Price Range

Now is the time to determine your price range. For this article, we’ll say that there are 3 main price ranges to consider for your handgun: low (less than $400), medium ($400 – $600), and high ($600+).

Most solid-quality handguns will fall within the medium range, which is where we recommend shopping if you have the money to. Obviously, there are fantastic guns in the higher price range, and surprisingly quite a few good ones in the lower range, so things all depend on your budget a bit.

But always remember – you get what you pay for, and guns are an investment that you can always resell for a very tiny loss (and sometimes gain).

So after all of this talk, it’s time to tell you what gun we recommend to a majority of people looking to buy their first handgun.

What is the most reliable handgun to carry?

Again, the gun that you should pick is the gun that works best for you and feels the best in your hand.

But we would have to recommend the Glock 23 as a fantastic all-around gun to get for your first one. It’s a great balance of size and power, chambers the very versatile .40 S&W round, and is one of the most reliable guns out there. It will run you around $450 – 550 in most places but is well worth the cost.

Conclusion – How to Choose a Handgun

So in conclusion, just go out there and shoot some guns! See what types, manufacturers, and calibers feel the best for you, and decide for yourself! Welcome to the gun club too, we’re glad to have you!

Dating a Luger P08 can be a bit tricky, as the gun was produced over a long period of time and underwent several changes. However, with a bit of knowledge and some careful inspection, it is possible to determine the approximate date of manufacture of a Luger P08.

  1. Look at the markings on the gun. The Luger P08 was produced by several different manufacturers, and the markings will give you an idea of which company made the gun. The most common manufacturers were DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken), Erfurt, and Mauser.
  2. Look at the serial number. The serial number can give you an idea of when the gun was produced. Luger P08s produced before 1920 will have serial numbers that start with the letter “A”. Guns produced between 1920 and 1942 will have serial numbers that start with the letters “byf” or “svw”. Guns produced after 1942 will have serial numbers that start with the letters “ac” or “duv”.
  3. Another key feature to consider is the safety catch. Luger P08s produced before 1942 will have a safety catch on the left side of the gun, while guns produced after 1942 will have a safety catch on the right side of the gun.
  4. Besides, You can also look at the chamber date. Luger P08s were tested and stamped with the date of acceptance, this date is called the chamber date, and it is located on the chamber of the barrel. You can use this date as a reference but keep in mind that this date may not be the exact date of manufacture.

Finally, you can also consult with experts or reference books on the subject to help you determine the date of manufacture of your Luger P08. With a bit of research and careful inspection, you should be able to narrow down the date of your Luger P08 to within a few years.

It’s important to note that the Luger P08 is a highly collectible firearm and it’s always better to consult with experts before making any changes or modifications.

The 40 cal round (.40 S&W) round is an absolutely fantastic round. It is a great balance between the power of the .45 ACP and the size of the 9mm. The .40 is a decently wide and heavy round, so it has very good stopping power, while still being able to be double stacked in a magazine for maximum capacity when you really need it. But what gun manufacturer makes the Best 40 Cal Handgun? Some of the favorites are the Glock pistols, Springfield XDm’s, Walther P99, and the Smith and Wesson M&P’s. But what one can claim the top as the top 40 caliber handgun?

With four categories in mind; reliability, reputation, price, and size, we have chosen the Glock 23 as the best 40-cal handgun available today. Some may disagree with this choice, but none can deny Glock’s reliable track record.

Reliability
Ask almost anyone and they’ll admit that Glock pistols are some of the most reliable guns out there. They have been designed to be very simple and extremely rugged, so naturally, they are very reliable guns. Some people have done torture tests on them to extreme levels, such as 150 thousand through them, with up to 15 thousand rounds with no cleaning or maintenance. They have buried them in sand, dirt, mud, water, paste, snow, and about everything else you can imagine. People have even run over them and dropped them out of planes, and in the end, they still end up functioning just fine. Their design is made to be extremely reliable and durable. The Glock 23 is a great example of this. Others may be reliable also, but the Glock wins at this.

Reputation
Glock pistols have always had a pretty good reputation. They are known for their modern, blocky design that some call “ugly as sin”. But I’m looking for a gun that will shoot when I want it to, every single time, not just look pretty in my hand as if someone is attacking me or my loved ones. They will also fire every time you pull the trigger because of the safety built into the trigger, so no worrying about flipping the safety, or if the gun is ready to shoot. If there are bullets in the gun, it’s ready to shoot.

Price
For the price, the Glocks are also amazing guns. They are a great quality and reliable gun, for a reasonable price, usually a little over $500. When you compare them to many 1911 models, even though they are not as pretty, they are at least a few hundred dollars cheaper, and usually more reliable than their “prettier counterparts”. There are some other great guns out there, like the SIGs, Kimbers, and H&K’s, but for the price, the Glock is a better choice.

Size
The Glock 23 is of the compact size category, or a medium-sized semi-auto pistol. I think this is a great overall size for a gun. It’s big enough to be comfortable to shoot repeatedly, feels great in the hand, and handles the snappy recoil of the 40-cal round very well. It is big enough to strap to your hip and take in place of the full-sized gun. Yet, it is small enough to potentially concealed carry. It’s not overly huge, so it can be concealed in a holster somewhere on the body. Many people consider this an amazing concealed-carry gun. In my opinion, it is a little large to conceal carry daily unless you are a very big guy (I’m 6’3” and 230lbs, and I think it’s a little big) or have a good way to conceal it.

The bottom line is that the Glock 23 is all around the Best 40 Cal Handgun available today. Even though it isn’t the prettiest gun, it will fire every single time, no matter what you put it through. The polymer frame makes it lightweight and durable, and for the average price of around $500, you really can’t go wrong with this gun. It’s a great size compromise as being enough to shoot comfortably, yet small enough to carry concealed. I grew up shooting one and it is still my all-time favorite gun.

Handguns for Women are becoming more and more of a normal thing in today’s culture. There are a lot of messed up people out there, so sexual assaults, rapes, and violent crimes are still a real threat to women everywhere. You never know what is going to happen. But what is the ‘Best Handgun for Women’ to carry with them to protect themselves? A gun for women is a completely different thing than one for men, mostly because of hand size and strength. It’s much more comfortable for women to shoot a smaller-sized gun, with a lighter trigger pull and smaller recoil than a standard-sized semi-auto handgun. But what is the best handgun for women?

We’ve used the categories of size, caliber, reliability, and looks as the determining factors in choosing a gun for women. With these categories in mind, we’ve chosen the Smith and Wesson Model 637 as the Best Handgun for Women. The second-place gun in this category would be the Charter Arms Pink Lady.

Size
The size of this gun is perfect for women to carry with them in purses or handbags. With only a 1 7/8” barrel, this ‘snub nose’ gun is easy to take in and out of any bag. It’s also a smaller framed gun, so it will feel really good in women’s hands. The gun itself is only 15 oz, which makes it easy to throw in a bag and carry daily. It’ll even fit in a jacket pocket or tucked-in pants.

Caliber
The Smith and Wesson 637 shoots a 38 special round, which is a good self-defense round. This type of gun is carried by many law enforcement personnel as a concealed weapon, and the 38 special has also become synonymous with mob assassinations. The .38 Special round easily packs enough punch to be effective at stopping attackers and is a readily available and decently cheap round to purchase. Its recoil is also not terribly bad, so it is compatible with weaker female hands. Another point for the S&W 637 being the Best Handgun for Women

Reliability
A Smith and Wesson revolver is one of the most reliable guns you can buy. Revolvers are traditionally very reliable, and Smith and Wesson are considered the Best Revolver Brand out there today. This section is also where the Smith and Wesson 637 beat out the Charter Arms Pink Lady. Many people are very unhappy with the reliability of the Pink Lady, and it over feels like a cheaper gun. You will not go wrong with an S&W 637 when it comes to reliability.

Looks
When choosing a gun for women, looks are usually more important to them than the function of the gun. That’s another area where Smith and Wesson Revolvers hit it spot on. The Smith and Wesson 637 with pink grips is the ultimate women’s gun because it was designed especially for women. To women, it really makes owning a gun more fun, as well as personal, because the gun was made for them.

The best handgun for women is Smith & Wesson model 637
Smith & Wesson Model 637

The bottom line on the ‘Best Handgun for Women’ is that the Smith and Wesson 637 makes having and carrying a gun a fun and cool thing. With the world seemingly getting to be a more dangerous place, having that self-defense handgun is very important for women to avoid being abducted, attacked, and harmed. It is a good idea for women to look into these guns, and guys, definitely look at getting on for your mothers, wives, or daughters. It’s the best way for them to protect themselves from danger and harm. There’s no reason to take a chance with their safety. Make buying a gun and becoming comfortable with it a priority for any special woman in your life. It could just be the one thing that saves them from harm.

Cleaning a Luger P08 is an important task that should be done regularly to ensure that the weapon functions properly and is safe to use. Here are the steps to properly clean a Luger P08:

German P08 Luger – Cleaning Disassembly & Assembly

  1. Disassemble the weapon by removing the magazine and making sure the chamber is empty. Then, remove the toggle assembly by pulling it to the rear and lifting it out of the receiver.
  2. Use a cleaning rod with a brush attachment to scrub the barrel and chamber. Use a cleaning solution specifically designed for firearms, such as Hoppe’s No. 9, and make sure to remove all debris and residue.
  3. Clean the toggle assembly by using a brush to scrub all surfaces, including the toggle lock and striker. Use a cleaning solution to remove any debris or residue.
  4. Clean the receiver by using a brush to scrub all surfaces, including the rails and trigger assembly. Use a cleaning solution to remove any debris or residue.
  5. Clean the magazine by disassembling it and cleaning all parts with a brush and cleaning solution.
  6. Once all parts have been cleaned, dry them thoroughly with a clean cloth.
  7. Reassemble the weapon, making sure that all parts are properly aligned and securely in place.
  8. Lubricate the weapon as needed, being careful not to use too much lubricant as this can attract debris and cause issues with the weapon’s function. A light coating of oil on all moving parts is sufficient.
  9. Test the weapon to ensure that it is functioning properly and safely.

It is important to note that the Luger P08 is an older weapon and may require additional care and maintenance. Always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for specific cleaning and maintenance instructions. Additionally, it is important to always wear gloves and eye protection when cleaning a firearm.

Remember that cleaning a firearm is an essential task that should be done regularly to ensure proper function and safety. Follow these steps and you will have a clean and well-maintained Luger P08.

The Luger P08 is a classic handgun known for its unique design and impressive performance. Developed by German arms manufacturer Georg Luger in the early 20th century, the Luger P08 quickly became a favorite of militaries and civilians alike. Here, we will take a look at how the Luger P08 works and what makes it such a special handgun.

How a Luger P08 works?

The Luger P08 is a semi-automatic pistol, meaning that it uses the energy from the fired cartridge to automatically reload the next round into the chamber. The gun is fed by an 8-round detachable box magazine, which is inserted into the grip of the gun. The magazine is released by pressing a button located on the left side of the grip.

Once the magazine is loaded and inserted into the gun, the first round is chambered by pulling back the toggle action located on the top of the gun. This action also serves as the gun’s cocking mechanism, as it compresses the recoil spring located inside the barrel.

When the trigger is pulled, the hammer is released and strikes the firing pin, which in turn strikes the primer on the back of the cartridge. This causes the powder inside the cartridge to ignite, creating pressure that pushes the bullet out of the barrel and toward the target.

The recoil from the fired cartridge then pushes the toggle action back, which in turn extracts the spent cartridge and chambers the next round. This process repeats with each pull of the trigger, allowing for rapid fire.

One of the most notable features of the Luger P08 is its toggle action. This unique design was chosen by Luger as it allows for a very short and compact gun while still providing a strong locking mechanism. The toggle action also helps to distribute the recoil energy of the fired cartridge, making the gun more comfortable to shoot.

Another key feature of the Luger P08 is its adjustable rear sight. This allows the shooter to fine-tune their aim for different ranges and bullet weights. Additionally, the Luger P08 also features an external safety located on the left side of the gun, which prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin when engaged.

The Luger P08 was widely used by the German military in World War I and World War II and was also adopted by several other countries. Its unique design and reliability made it a favorite among soldiers and officers alike. The Luger P08 was also popular with civilian shooters and is still highly sought after by collectors today.

In conclusion, the Luger P08 is a classic handgun known for its unique design and impressive performance. Its toggle action and adjustable rear sight make it a comfortable and accurate weapon, while its external safety adds an extra level of safety. The Luger P08’s reputation as a reliable and durable handgun has solidified its place in history as a respected and iconic firearm.
